Globus

Globus lets you share data with collaborators at other research institutions, whether your data exists on Apocrita or a Laptop/PC. You can read more about Globus here.

Please let us know if you would like a Globus Endpoint added to your directory. If you would like a demonstration first, please contact IT Research Consultants: its-research-consultants@qmul.ac.uk

Cost

We can provide all costed research with 1TB free storage and 1TB free scratch space. Any storage over 1TB will be charged per TB per year. We can also purchase storage in bulk for requests over 128TB to help lower costs.

We recommend that you estimate how much data you expect to process over the duration of your project. You can then calculate the cost using our cost calculator.

please note: you will need your QMUL ID and password to access the cost calculator.

Storage type

  • Storage (No Backup) - This option is for short term data that can easily be recreated rather than backed up. We use fast SSD (Solid State Drive), rather than HDD (Hard Disk drive) disks, to ensure data are reproduced quickly.
  • Storage (with Backup) - This is for data that requires regular backup in case of deletion.
  • Backup External Data - We can backup data that requires a second copy for disaster recovery. The primary data can be stored elsewhere and does not have to be processed on Apocrita. Please note, we will need to understand your requirements and discuss the available options.
  • Archive - Data that is no longer actively used, remains important to your project or must be retained for future reference or compliance can be archived for long-term retention. We recommend to archive data periodically to reduce storage costs.

Directory name

All storage directories follow a naming convention of:

  • /data/INSTITUTE-ProjectName e.g. /data/WHRI-GenomicsProject
  • /data/INSTITUTE-LabName e.g. /data/BCI-ResearchLab
  • /data/INSTITUTE-PI-LabName e.g. /data/EECS-SMITH-ResearchLab
